Automatic Crop Farm with Villagers — AFK Food & Emeralds on DonutSMP

Let Villagers do all the work. An automatic Villager-based crop farm harvests and replants crops with zero maintenance — producing food and trading materials while you explore.

Materials Needed

  • Farmer Villager (brown coat with straw hat)
  • Second Villager (for crop collection)
  • Farmland area (any size)
  • Water source blocks (within 4 blocks of farmland)
  • Hoppers and chests
  • Composters (workstation)
  • Minecart with Hopper (optional for better rates)
  • Fence or blocks for containment

1. How It Works

Farmer Villagers (linked to a Composter) automatically harvest fully grown crops and replant them. When their inventory is full, they throw excess crops to other Villagers.

The trick: place a second Villager who can't reach the crops. The Farmer throws items toward them, which land on Hoppers or are collected by Minecarts with Hoppers. The items never reach the second Villager — they go straight into your chests.

2. Building the Farm

1. Create a flat farming area with water every 4 blocks (one water block hydrates 9×9 farmland) 2. Till the dirt into farmland with a Hoe 3. Plant the desired crop (Wheat Seeds, Carrots, Potatoes, or Beetroot Seeds) 4. Place a Composter near the farming area — this is the Farmer's workstation 5. Add a Farmer Villager to the field (must be linked to the Composter) 6. Below the farming field, place Hoppers or a Minecart with Hopper to collect dropped crops 7. Place a second non-farmer Villager nearby where the Farmer can "see" them — this triggers the crop-throwing behavior

3. Minecart Hopper Collection

For the most reliable collection, place a Minecart with Hopper running on powered rails beneath the farm floor. The minecart rides back and forth, collecting any dropped items through the farmland blocks.

This catches items the Farmer drops before harvesting and items thrown toward the other Villager.

4. Scaling and Multi-Crop Design

Build separate farm sections for each crop type: - **Wheat**: Most versatile — makes Bread, breeds animals, trades with Farmers - **Carrots**: Best food source (Golden Carrots with gold), breeds Pigs/Villagers - **Potatoes**: Good food when baked, breeds Villagers - **Beetroot**: Least useful but Farmer Villagers still buy them

Each section needs its own Farmer Villager. Build sections side by side for a multi-crop mega-farm.

5. Trading the Output

Farmer Villagers buy: - 20 Wheat → 1 Emerald - 22 Carrots → 1 Emerald (or less when cured) - 26 Potatoes → 1 Emerald - 15 Beetroot → 1 Emerald

With cured Zombie Villagers, these ratios improve dramatically. Combined with an auto-crop farm, you have a fully passive emerald income.
