Automatic Tree Farm — Unlimited Wood on DonutSMP
Wood is the foundation of Minecraft. An automatic tree farm produces logs, planks, sticks, charcoal fuel, and saplings — all without swinging an axe.
Materials Needed
- • Saplings (Birch recommended for uniform growth)
- • Dispenser with Bone Meal
- • Pistons and/or TNT
- • Observers
- • Redstone components
- • Hoppers and chests
- • Glass (for containment)
- • Water buckets
1. Choosing a Tree Type
**Birch** is the best for automation: grows to a fixed height (5-7 blocks), no branches, predictable shape. Oak can grow large and branch unpredictably. Spruce (2×2 mega) gives the most wood per growth but is harder to automate.
For beginners: start with Birch. For maximum output: implement a 2×2 Spruce design.
2. Simple Piston Tree Farm
1. Plant a sapling on a dirt block 2. Place a Dispenser facing the sapling, filled with Bone Meal 3. Wire the Dispenser to a clock circuit (Observer loop or Comparator clock) 4. When the tree grows, use Pistons to push the log column sideways 5. The displaced logs break and drop as items 6. Collect with water streams and hoppers 7. The sapling often replants from leaf decay
For Birch: a simple 2-piston stack pushes all 5-7 logs at once.
3. TNT-Based Tree Farm
For higher output: 1. Grow trees in a contained area 2. Use TNT (from a TNT duper, if server allows) to blast all the logs 3. Collect dropped items with water + hoppers 4. Replant saplings with a dispenser
TNT dupers are the most efficient method for large-scale wood production but may not be allowed on all servers — check DonutSMP rules.
4. AFK Nether Fungus Farm
The most efficient AFK wood farm: 1. Place Warped/Crimson Nylium 2. Dispenser plants Fungus + applies Bone Meal 3. Huge Fungus grows 4. Pistons or TNT break the stems 5. Replant and repeat
Nether Fungi grow in a predictable pattern and produce large amounts of stem blocks. The stems function identically to logs.
5. What to Do with Wood
- **Logs → Planks → Sticks**: Trade Sticks to Fletcher Villagers for emeralds - **Logs → Charcoal**: Renewable fuel for super-smelters - **Logs → Planks → Crafting**: Boats, tools, building - **Leaves → Saplings + Apples**: Apple farming from Oak/Dark Oak - **Scaffolding**: Bamboo + String (but wood is always useful)
